While the weather was cold, the spirits remained high and the athletes remained focused as the 2014 Athletics Ontario Cross Country Championships were an overwhelming success. Taking place on November 16 at the beautiful Firemen’s Park in Niagara Falls, this highly anticipated event was well-represented across Ontario and will certainly be a benchmark for future provincial championships. The event, which was executed through a partnership between the Niagara Sport Commission and the Niagara Olympic Club, was special in many respects, not the least of which was due to the record number of participants who took to the course. Among the record-setting 976 entries, there were some clear standout performances across all ages and distances, highlighting the incredible distance running talent that resides in Ontario.
For all of the award winners, their victories proved even more special as Canadian Olympian Mohammed Ahmed was on-site to present the awards. Not only does Mohammed have great ties to the sport, competing at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, but he also has fond memories of the host facility, Firemen’s Park, where he won an OFSSA Gold Medal.

The Niagara Sport Commission (NSC) has by no means been asleep at the switch when it comes to working with us to make this year’s AO Cross Country Championships a thing of beauty, always remembered.
And to improve the experience of everyone involved, they have developed a FREE, downloadable App (iOS and Android).
Here are a few basic screen shots. We encourage you to take a closer look on your mobile. Go on, just do it…
More content will continue to be added as we get closer to “the weekend”.
Let us know if you have additional requirements / suggestions / comments.
It’s a “first” for NSC and for NOC.

When Kayla McGowan first joined the Niagara Olympic Club more than a year ago, she was always getting beaten by the more experienced distance runners at the club.
“They had all been doing it for a long time and I was very intimidated by them,” said the Grade 10 student at Eden in St. Catharines. “I always let them win and I would trail behind.”
All that began to change last spring when she was seventh in both the 1,500 and 3,000 metres in the midget girls division at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships. A second in the 3,000 metres and fourth in the 1,500 metres at this past summer’s Athletics Ontario championships has brought out the competitiveness in the 15-year-old.
“At practices I don’t let people pass me,” she said. “I have to win now. The feeling of winning is so good that I don’t want to give it up.”

OFSAA: Here we come!!
Excellent comments from Coach Bill MacDonald:
As you can see by the posts, NOC had a phenomenal weekend in Vancouver, especially Heather, but what can’t be overlooked is the phenomenal performance by the NOC TEAM. Six athletes went to Vancouver, six athletes showed up on the line ready to race and six athletes made NOC proud. For Kristen, Avery, Kayla and Cailen it was their first experience at Nationals.
Some may say it’s just another race, but it’s not. The best athletes from across the country are competing. This is the pinnacle of the season. For our Grade 9 athletes, Avery, Kayla and Cailin this meant going from racing 3K at OFSAA to racing 5K at Nationals, which is a big jump. They made us proud they way they raced with guts and determination.
Laura, Kristen and Heather were team leaders, truly mentors for the younger athletes. Laura and Kristen had fantastic races, which is very difficult in such a long season, a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Overall, Team NOC placed 7th!
Well done TEAM NOC, you made us all proud.
