ST. CATHARINES – The Athletics Onatrio bantam, midget and youth track and field championships are coming to St. Catharines.
The Niagara Olympic Club is hosting the event in conjunction with the London Legion Track and Field Alliance. The championship is being hosted at the club’s facility Aug. 4 and 5 because the London Legion doesn’t have the facilities required to host the event, but will help provide some of the 100 volunteers needed to make the Athletics Ontario sanctioned event run smoothly.
Organizers expect between 900 and 1000 athletes from across Ontario will compete over the two days. The athletes are between the ages of 11 and 17.
Among the top local hopefuls is Troy Smith, from Grimsby, who just finished seventh in the 1,500 metres at the junior nationals. His brother, Gavin, will also be competing. Other hopefuls are: Heather Petrick from St. Catharines, who also raced in the junior nationals; Tracy Myers from Beamsville; Kristen Kuhn from Crystal Beach, who placed fourth at OFSAA in the 3,000 metres; and J.T Hunt and T.J. Kountourogiannis from Niagara Falls. More…
