Jared MacLeod: National Team Athlete to Ops Manager
555.jpg

2006 Commonwealth Games Athletics Canada (AC) – You were a longtime national team athlete, the male athlete representative on the board, and now you are working in the national office – what drew you to the Operations Manager position?

Jared MacLeod (JM) – As the athlete rep, I had a chance to have an impact on some positive changes on behalf of Canada’s track and field athletes. I see this as an opportunity to continue to do that as well as helping in any way that I can with all these new changes the organization is going through as a whole.

AC – Can you outline some of your key responsibilities as Operations Manager?

JM – Effective delivery of the high performance program and management of the National Team Unit. Management of the technical budget and AC policies like athlete carding and team selection.

AC – How do you plan to use your experience as an athlete in your new role?

JM – I was part of the national team for almost 10 years, which gives me a unique perspective when it comes to a lot of my responsibilities as the Operations Manager. I think my experiences as an athlete should allow me to make well informed decisions that will hopefully benefit Canada’s athletes. I feel I have a big responsibility to them and to our sport in Canada, which I think has a bright future and I’m excited to be part of it.

AC – What were the biggest challenges faced in making the transition away from full-time elite athlete?

JM – Honestly, the transition into working full-time was pretty easy because I did a lot of things to set myself up to begin working immediately after my last competition as a full-time athlete. The hardest part has probably been trying to find the time to workout as often as I’d like.

AC – Are you ready to go out on a limb and pronounce yourself the fastest person in the office?

JM – I guess that depends on the distance. If we’re talking short distance with obstacles in the way, like office furniture? Yeah, you might as well just give me the gold.
