The Royal Canadian Legion Youth Track and Field Championship begin Friday August 9 in Langley, B.C., at McLeod Athletic Park. The championship, hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary BC/Yukon Command, will see 736 athletes compete for national titles over the three-day competition.

Delayed video footage will be available throughout the competition at www.YO.ca. A two-hour special will also air on Shaw at a date to be determined in August.
Over 1,000 entries
In total 1149 entries are registered for the Legion Youth Championship, below is a listing of events with the most entries by age category and gender.
Midget Boys Track – 28 in the 800-metres
Jumps – 18 in high jump
Throws – 17 in discus throw
Midget Girls Track – 30 in the 100-metres
Jumps – 18 in long jump
Throws – 16 in discus throw
Youth Boys Track – 37 in the 200-metres
Jumps – 15 in the high jump and long jump
Throws – 18 in shot put
Youth Girls Track – 34 in 300-metre hurdles
Jumps – 16 in high jump
Throws – 15 in discus, hammer, and javelin
108 relay teams will take part in eight relay events including the midget and youth 4×100-metres, youth 4×400-metres and in the midget medley relay.
Special events
A number of special events are planned in coordination with the 2013 Royal Canadian Legion Youth Track and Field Championship beginning with the official Opening Ceremony on the evening of Friday August 9. Other special events include the National Peacekeepers Day Tribute to honour the 158 Canadian fallen soldiers from the Afghanistan War. A 60th Anniversary Korean War Armistice will take place as well as a Candlelight Tribute during the Closing Ceremony to symbolically pass the Torch of Remembrance.
